Gators DL Patchan shot, should recover (AP)
A University of Florida football player is recovering after being shot in the shoulder while at a Tampa area-park. Florida coach Urban Meyer says Gator defensive lineman Matt Patchan is expected to fully recover. Patchan was shot Friday night. Details of the shooting are not yet known. The 6-foot-7, 265-pound Patchan enrolled early at Florida in January after graduating from high school.
Jackson St. pursues ex-LSU QB Perrilloux (AP)
Count Jackson State in on the Ryan Perrilloux sweepstakes. Coach Rick Comegy said he is attempting to lure the dismissed LSU quarterback to campus for a visit in hopes of signing the troubled player. Perrilloux could play right away if he decides to transfer to a Football Championship Subdivision team.
Paterno: Penn State has plenty of merits (AP)

Joe Paterno wants football recruits to consider Penn State on its merits, not on whether the Hall of Fame coach will be around for the length of their stay. Speaking before an Alumni Club function in suburban Philadelphia on Saturday, the 81-year-old Paterno cited Penn State's strong academics and football history as reasons recruits should think about going to school in Happy Valley.
