The Detroit Red Wings looked as sharp as they have throughout the playoffs -- and perhaps in any postseason -- jumping out to a big lead and beating the Dallas Stars 4-1 Thursday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals. Detroit played for the first time since sweeping the Colorado Avalanche a week earlier.

Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren said Timonen was hit by a shot by Montreal's Andrei Markov late in Game 4 of Philadelphia's second-round victory over the Canadiens. |

| Zach Parise's power-play goal with 8:57 remaining snapped a tie and gave the United States a 6-4 victory over Germany in a qualifying-round game at the world hockey championship on Thursday night. The Americans appeared to have the game in hand when they scored three times in the opening 2:52, but Germany chipped away at the lead. |
| Maple Leafs fire coach Maurice (AP) |

Paul Maurice was fired as coach of the Maple Leafs on Wednesday after Toronto failed to make the playoffs during his two years. The dismissal was the first big move in what is expected to be an active offseason for the team. "This is a start of a new era for the Maple Leafs," interim general manager Cliff Fletcher said at a news conference at Air Canada Centre.
